Architectural Fabrication: Columns and Inlayed Posts
Fluted™ Posts are inlayed solid timbers and logs using solid hardwood inlays. The inlay process prevents checking of the posts, columns and beams as they dry and adds wonderful depth and design to the otherwise plain log. Use these logs in areas where they will get maximum visibility and/or where checking in drying logs would be undesirable. Fluted™ Log Columns are made on our architectural column lathe and are available in lengths up to 14' and widths to 24". Inlays and flutes are from Ash, Oak, Beech, Maple, Hickory, Black Locust, Elm, Cherry and Walnut. Matching inlayed beams are also available.
Fluted™ Open Beams are Fluted™ Beams in an open configuration. These beams are used in vertical configurations such as columns and non-structural horizontal applications. They may be combined to create squares, hexagons and octagons (shown).
Fluted™ columns are available from 18" to 24" in diameter in the octagon configuration. Total load carrying capacity is similar to solid 8x8" to 12x12" solid timber posts, but can be adjusted to meet structural load requirements. 18" columns are priced from $400/ln. ft. The standard configuration of this column is 20" diameter with a load carrying capacity equal to eight 4" x 4" solid timbers, and priced at $450/ln ft. Fluting is from Ash, White Oak, Red Oak, Hard Maple or American Beech. Flanges are from Douglas Fir, Honduras Mahogany, Western Maple, White Oak, Ash or Cherry. Other materials may be available. Stock 20" columns are available in 5' to 10' lengths with Douglas Fir or Maple flanges and Red Oak or White Oak flutes. Other sizes are built to specs.
